Makha Bucha Day

February 8

‘Makha Bucha’ Day (วันมาฆบูชา) is a Buddhist holiday and a national public holiday throughout Thailand. It is a very important day for Buddhists and one of the three holiest days in the Buddhist calendar, which usually falls on the full moon day (15th day of the waxing moon) on the third lunar month. In the Thai language, the name is derived from Pali; the third lunar month is known as Makha and Bucha means “to venerate” or “to honor”. Makha Bucha Day is literraly for the veneration of the Lord Buddha and his teachings on the full moon day of the third lunar month.

On Makha Bucha Day people visit temples to pray, meditate, and engage in various forms of merit. They also observe the five precepts of Buddhism. Temples across Thailand hold candlelight processions in the evening to celebrate the day.

All public offices and many business are closed on Makha Bucha. All Bars are usually closed as the sale of alcohol is not appropriate and banned on Buddhist holidays.
