The grand old dame of Chaing Mai’s gay scene
On the first of February 2017 Secrets Bar will be celebrating its tenth anniversary. As the grand old dame of the Night bazaar, Secrets is now enjoying renewed success in what is its fourth incarnation on Chiang Mai’s relatively new gay soi 6 and has become Chiang Mai’s most popular bar.
Secrets original location was in the soi behind the D2 Hotel (affectionately known as Sleaze Alley) and was always noticeably better managed than other bars in the same strip. In 2012, Secrets Bar seized the opportunity to move away from that alley whoose communal areas were becoming incresingly decrepit, and together with CU Bar, set up in smarter and more spacious premises in an adjacent location.
In 2014 Secrets was on the move again as the whole Night Bazaar site was being closed for re-development. Once again, along with CU Bar, Secrets moved to new and yet larger premises in Changmoi on the moat at Somphet Gold Place.
However, the new location, shared with some late night tourist breeder bars nearby, never felt quite so comfortable as a gay venue. After Ram Bar announced it was moving to a new location on Charoen Prathet Soi 6, which was already home to a couple of gay bars in the Kalare Night Bazaar complex, Secrets decided to follow them. The latest and by far the best incarnation of Secrets Bar, opened it’s doors on October 10th 2015 at its brand new purpose built premises. The new venue offers a discreet and comfortable environment and is located right next door to Ram Bar on what is now the very gay soi 6.
Since re-opening, the smart air conditioned venue has proved to be very successful and is now the most popular place for foreign tourists and expats to socialise, as well as enjoy the company of younger asian guys who hang out there playing pool.
