The Edge

This week The Edge, a new and much hyped gay owned eatery on the Ping river finally opened its doors, or rather gates since its outdoors. Waxing lyrically as usual, in this month’s out in Thailand magazine, James Barnes described the Edge as, “Chiang Mai’s newest and most exciting eatery”. He gushes on to suggest that The Edge will address Britain’s notoriously bad culinary reputation with a menu of contemporary British food with an Asian twist. According to James, this will include “(homemade) sausages and mash”, “quail scotch egg with Thai sausage meat”, “steak and ale pie” and, “mini Thai pork burgers”.

The Edge Chiang MaiWe first mentioned The Edge last month in our November article updates for Gay Chiang Mai It is located near Kad Muang Mai (Chiang Mai’s main fresh produce market) so at least the ingredients should be fresh. However, it’s away from the mainstream nightlife areas being situated on the riverbank behind popular gay bar, Ram Bar and the River House Massage so has plenty of synergy for gay patrons.

On the opening night we had a quick look in and the place has certainly had a makeover with the dining area being a small Thai style sala overlooking the river and surrounded by a well cropped lawn. The menu looked interesting though was hard to read in dim light (a pet hate, that many restaurants are guilty of). However, the prices are on the high side for Chiang Mai, given that British food is already very well catered for here and many of the retired gay ex-pats live here on a tight budget.

Apparently they will also do Sunday Lunches and breakfasts. Whether that will be enough to tear our regular gay crowd away from it’s weekly Sunday Lunch at the Pub remains to be seen, but we will try the food at The Edge sometime soon and provide a review. We wish the owners well with their new endeavour and look forward to trying the food.
