Party time – Songkran is coming

Welcome to our Songkran newsletter from www.gayinchiangmai.com/news/.

It’s April and it's hot which means it is time for Chiang Mai's biggest party of the Year – The Thai New Year Songkran Water Festival. For more information on all the up and coming parties for Songkran see our Chiang Mai Gay events calendar. Our sponsors Radchada Garden Cafe are having a pre-sonkran party this Monday 7th April featuring a FREE curry buffet. All are welcome.

Despite the political turmoil in Bangkok, Chiang Mai has had a bumper high season this year with plenty of gay visitors and old friends flocking to the city over the winter months. The pollution associated with the start of hot season and burning the fields and forests started late this year and has not been too bad. Following the first summer storms the air is now cleaning up nicely for Songkran. Come to Chiang Mai; everything is great here.

The Chiang Mai Gay scene is always changing with venues opening and closing all the time. You can find a summary of the current scene in our Chiang Mai Gay Guide The last few weeks has seen several re-openings in the late night scene (read more: late night re-furbished). Meanwhile the Night Bazaar era at one of Chiang Mai’s best known gay areas has finally come to an end with the last two bars, Secrets Bar and CU Bar moving to new locations along the moat.

Scroll down to see a summary of recent articles on Chiang mai Gay News that may be of interest, including details of other festive season events and parties.   We hope you will find our content interesting and informative.

Thank you for your time.

Best wishes from Chiang Mai

Radchada Garden Café – Songkran

Songkran 2014

Songkran Water Festival Two weeks from today will be the first day of Songkran, Thailand’s mad New Year water festival celebrations. Every year, for a hot week in April, Thailand’s northern city of Chiang Mai undergoes it’s metamorphosis from laid back garden city to the full blown party capital of Thailand. Night Bazaar – End of an Era

Secrets Bar and CU Bar are moving After weeks of uncertainty the news finally came in the last week that the leases for the bars at the Night Bazaar would not be renewed. Furthermore, the remaining businesses there have been given virtually no notice of the impending closure which will take effect at the end of this month. i.e. in two days’ time! Unbelievable in most countries, but, as we all know, this is Thailand. The good news is that, […]

Five Years Ago Today – The last Gay Pride

21 February 2009 is the day Chiang Mai was disgracefully brought to the attention of the world, not because of its seven hundred year history, Lanna architecture, cultural heritage, temples, natural beauty and fabulous people, but because of a small intolerant minority with a political agenda. 21 February is now the day to remember violence and persecution against LGBT.
