Election – Alcohol prohibition

Quick reminder, advanced voting starts tomorrow in the Thai general election and, in accordance with Thai law, the sale of alcohol is banned between 6 p.m. today, Saturday and midnight on Sunday. The same applies to next weekend for the main voting.

From past experience, general elections are the one occasion when the law is strictly enforced and any open establishments are likely to be shut down by the Police on the assumption of guilt. i.e no cocktails in tea pots! At least, this was our previous experience in Chang Mai. Enforcement is particularly strict on Saturday night, as the Police have less to do than Sunday when they are managing polling stations. We also understand the ban includes the consumption of alcohol and private parties, so if you are planning to stay in and drink be discreet and keep noise levels well down if you don’t want unwelcome attention.
