Although still ten days to the main Loy Krathong festival the first of many events apparently takes place today. As it’s renowned as one of the most spectacular displays we thought we’d give it a mention so you can go take a look. The event is staged in SanSai, near Mae-jo university and involves the simultaneous release of thousands of fire lanterns or Khom Loy.
The event in previous years has proved hugely popular with many thousands attending. You should go early (late afternoon) and be prepared to wait and queue. There area a number of Buddhist ceremonies before the launch. Our understanding is this is the main event open to everyone and is free if you just go and watch. There is a second special event on 9th November for which charges apply and is aimed at a select audience. See this website for more details:
