Dreaming of a white Christmas?

The cool season has certainly arrived with a vengeance in Chiang Mai over the last week. Many ex-pats who’ve been here a while are saying this is the coldest they can remember. The situation has been made worse by unusually brisk winds earlier in the week.

Of course, for many used to winters in the higher latitudes of the northern hemisphere the 25 degree plus daytime temperatures and beautiful sunshine are veritable delights. And the need to put an extra blanket on the bed and not run the air-con at night heightens the perception of well being. Meanwhile, our Thai friends have spent the week dressing up like Scott of the Antarctic.

Below you can see the weather records for the last week in Chiang Mai with the temperature dropping as low as 10 Degrees (Celsius) which is below normal. Our Thai friends are starting to believe the rumours that it will snow in Chiang Mai. Well, that seems unlikely, as the nightime low temperatures in Chiang Mai are forecast at 11-13 degrees for the coming week and humidity is low. However, outside of the city, and especially on the mountains it has been significantly colder and emergency zones have been declared “Bon Doi”.
