Monkey Club

Saying goodbye to a Chiang Mai institution

Monkey Club Chiang Mai Entrance

Monkey Club Chiang Mai, has become one of the cities legendary night-life venues and a pioneer of the Nimmanhaeminda Road clubbing scene. Sadly, after fifteen years it will be closing its doors for the last time at the end of February with the last night party on Feb 28.

Although not a gay club, Monkey always attracted a mixed clientèle and was quite popular with the gay crowd in the past. It has in some ways become a victim of the Nimmanhaeminda success story. It has lost business as other clubs have moved in, first Warm Up, then Tawan Deang and more recently Infinity and Maldives. There are now also several large bars in the vicinity such as Blar Blar Bar and Dayli for example. At the same time, as Nimmanhaeminda has become more upscale as a residential area, complaints about noise have been increasing in the area around Monkey.

From a gay perspective, it became much less of a contender since the opening of See Man Pub and G-Star have taken the major share of the gay market. For more details of the late night club scene see our guide to clubs discos and akraoke in Chiang Mai

Monkey Club’s other business Mo’C Mo’L (Monkey CLub & The Moon Lover), a large trendy restaurant on Huay Kaew Road near the university will remain open.
