It’s June!

Waiting for the monsoon

Doi Suteph
Doi Sutep temple – the Destination of the Vishaka Bucha day pilgrimage

The start of June 2015 was marked by Vishaka Bucha day, one of the most revered Buddhist holidays with the annual pilgrimage as thousands walk up the mountain to Doi Suteph in the early hours of the morning. In the last couple of years spirits were dampened by torrential rain, but this year, despite some afternoon showers, the night remained dry. Indeed, Chiang Mai remains rather too hot for the time of year and the arrival of the monsoon proper is early awaited by many.

Chiang Mai’s gay bar owners probably don’t see starting the month with a dry day as a particularly good omen, after one of the quietest and hottest months of May in a few years. However, our roving online reporters tell us that the hook up sites and apps continue to be busy with action not so hard to find. Several bars have suffered recently from a crackdown on late night opening, but, as usual in Thailand these things don’t last long and the status-quo seems to be returning.

Bar Scene

Whilst the opening of the new Ram Bar is eagerly awaited, Soho Bar and Secrets bar have been the mainstays of the Farang social bar scene. Secrets bar continues to be a popular place to meet up for younger locals and older foreigners, despite not always being open as late as many would wish. Meanwhile, Soho has been promoting its restaurant business and is open all day. Soho is also a good place to meet for a drink before heading to the new must see bar in town, the Grand Arena Coyote Boy bar and dance club just along the road.

There is also some life at the Night Bazaar with Orion Bar, Ice Bar and Ozeed Bar providing a dose of gayness to the tourists.

Down at the Sauna

Chiang Mai’s two gay sauna’s House of Male and Club One Seven continue to provide great places to make new friends and enjoy the company of like minded guys. Club One Seven, located right on the banks of the Ping River has special party nights on 7th, 17th and 27th of each month and is also a guesthouse. House of Male, is located close to the trendy Nimmanhaeimin area and Soho bar. They have their popular “Buddy Nights” every Tuesday and Thursday when two get in for the price of one.
