Chiang Mai Gay Bars – May roundup

Summer storms and summer fun

Chiang mai is livening up again. At last it’s May and the summer storm season has arrived bringing an end to a long and torrid hot burning season. Although, temperatures are still high, the summer storms provide a cooling respite refreshing the atmosphere and cleaning away the smoke. People are starting to return to the city to enjoy the classic of the season – mango and sticky rice. Nightlife fun is returning too.

Gay Bar Scene – some additions

During the hot season a couple of new LGBT places have opened up in Chiang Mai’s Chang Puek district providing some new gay nightlife options. The biggest news is the opening of Cher Club, a gay nightclub located off the superhighway near the Khwang Sing intersection. Chiang Mai has been without a gay bar of this type since the closure of See Man Pub so it’s great to see somewhere to hangout late, dance to the music and watch handsome coyote boys strut their stuff. Another newcomer back in March was ZESTpetit, a Taiwanese owned beer and cocktail lounge in the heart of Santitham. This smart bar is located in a new fully air conditioned building.

Cher Club is a new Dance Club and gay bar with coyote boys and handsome model shows. It is located on the superhighway frontage road heading towards Nimman from Chang Puek Rd (Khwan singh intersection). You’ll find Cher Club after about 300M just after the entrance road to Siam Rad (Chiang Mai Hospital) and the Dental Hospital. Open from 21:00 until late.

ZESTpetit is located in the heart of Santitham on Taewan Road. This is the road that runs from Toyota, on the Superhighway to Santitham Road and is about 250m From the old Sabbai Dee restaurant (closed) and Santitham Guest House. If you take the north exit from Santitham Plaza you will find the bar just across Tewan Road and slightly to the left. The venue features a long bar downstairs and a relaxing lounge upstairs.

Santitham, with lots of cheap studio rooms available, has become a popular accomodation location for Chiang Mai’s overgrown digital nomad population (Digital Nomad is a modern term for a backpacker with a laptop). Both ZESTpetit and the nearby Black Door are therefore attracting a new, younger crowd, making quite a different scene from the older ex-pats and tourists you will find frequenting some of the Gay Soi 6 Bars. However, Chang Puek is still home to Chiang Mai’s three male go-go show bars.

Gay Soi 6 at the Night Bazaar

Chiang Mai’s gay soi 6 at the Night bazaar has been developing since 2015 and now seems to have reached a respectable level of stability. The bars here have all been here for a couple of years or much more and there haven’t been too many openings and closures. A refreshing change given the fickle nature of Chiang Mai’s bar scene.

RAM bar, with its Cabaret Show is by far the most popular and is packed every night. Although the audience is more mixed with many the show attracting many regular tourists as well as locals. Next door to RAM bar, Secrets bar, now Chiang Mai’s oldest gay beer bar, continues to be popular with older ex-pats and has a bit more of a local feel to it. Up the soi Orion Bar is always lively and attracts a fun crowd.

Meanwhile, at the rear of the old Night bazaar building Chiang Mai 19 bar and the late night Karaoke Coffee boy are still open, but quite quiet. Although still listed on some out of date websites Ozeed bar closed a long time ago and Station 1 was sold and is no longer a gay bar. However, a new small gay bar called Mod Bar has opened where part of Ozeed was with a friendly owner.
